Energy at Home
This website is telling you about the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme and how it can help you buy greener electricity. But even if you do this, you should still try not to waste energy, as that is simply like throwing money away.
We recommend that you think of energy in terms of a hierarchy:
- Avoid Wasting Energy
- Use Energy Efficiently
- Use Green Energy
Here are ten things that you can do at home that cost nothing, yet should still save you energy - and money!
Keep furniture away from radiators.
Pull the curtains at dusk - this will help keep heat inside.
Close internal doors on cold days - this will reduce draughts and make you feel warmer.
Check the temperature on your room thermostat - most people don't need it above 20°C.
Check the timer on your heating system - is it still running if everyone goes out to work or school?
Use a microwave to reheat food or ready cooked meals, rather than a normal oven.
Put lids on saucepans when cooking vegetables - this will also stop the kitchen from getting too steamy.
Switch off lights in rooms that aren't being used.
Don't leave TVs, DVD players, games consoles or radios on standby - most models can be switched off without losing their settings.
Take a shower not a bath - or share the bath with a friend!
But maybe you are already doing those things. We can also offer you some basic advice on how to improve your energy efficiency.
And our page of green tariffs lets you choose a green electricity supplier.
